AXA Groups roots date back to the late 1970s when the
mutual insurer, Ancienne Mutuelle, headquartered in Rouen, France, merged
with several regional mutual companies. Soon thereafter, Douret Group was
acquired. The new company established was named AXA.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the insurer placed its focus on expansion efforts.
AXAs participation in the US Equitable Group in 1992 and its merger with
Union des Assecurances de Paris (UAP) in 1996 stand for mile-stones in the
Groups history. At the time, UAP was the biggest insurer on the French
market and, additionally, major shareholder of Colonia Group.
Since 2002, AXA has been the worlds biggest group of insurance companies.
The shares of the Group are today traded on the Paris and New York stock
exchanges and represented in the Euro Stoxx 50, Dow Jones and CAC 40 indices.
Approximately 135,000 people around the world contribute to AXAs corporate
performance.

The merger of GESA, SFA and INTER PARTNER ASSISTANCE
three specialised firms originating in the insurance and service sector
led to the foundation of AXA Assistance Deutschland. After its integration
into the AXA Assistance holding, the new parent company pooled the special
competencies and firmly anchored them into the international structures of
the Group. AXA Assistance is a world-wide assistance company which operates
more than 30 assistance centres, employing a staff of more than
6.000.
